Värmdö bryggeri

October 31, 2012

Värmdö bryggeriVärmdö bryggeri brewed it´s first batch of beer this weekend. About 2000 litres of Premium Lager is in the fermenter and hopefully ready before Christmas. Värmdö bryggeri is located on the peninsula Ingarö (at Säby Säteri) to the south-east of Stockholm. The people behind this new brewery are Stefan Slätt and Joakim Tillman. ” We have had an interest for beverages in general and beer in particular for many years “, says Stefan Slätt. ” We released our own beer brand (Maestro) last year just to learn more about sales and marketing”.

Maestro is a pale lager at 3.5 % and contract brewed at Krönleins bryggeri in Halmstad (released by Tillman och Slätts Dryckes AB).

Stefan continuous: ” The plan to start our own brewery has been around for a few years but it was not until we met the owner of Säby Säteri out on Ingarö that our plans really began to take shape . Säby Säteri already has a small-scale food production and they have plans to start a distillery and to produce cider in the near future. To be able to work with other producers and to have Säby Säteri Conference Centre close by makes this the ideal place for our brewery. To be involved in small-scale food production is clearly one of the main reason we are doing this ” .

They finalised the brewery build during the summer and recently they got the new tapline in place with a capacity of 3000 bottles per hour. The brewery will have an annual capacity of 3000 hl. The first beer they are going to brew is a Premium Lager (already in the fermenter) followed by an IPA. They have a lot of ideas for the future in how to develop their brewery and their brand. ” High quality with a lot of love and care is what we aim at “ he says.

The beers from Värmdö bryggeri will hopefully be available at the Systembolaget stores in Mölnvik, Gustavsberg and Orminge.

Bryggeri Portvakten

October 26, 2012

Bryggeri PortvaktenThe last couple of months has been crazy when it comes to new breweries in Sweden. More or less one brewery a week has opened up. It is hard to keep track of them all. I will do my best though and here is an interview with an interesting new brewery just starting up in Västerås.

Bryggeri Portvakten (Eng: Janitor, Caretaker or Porter if you like) is a really small brewery but Tomas Berglund (who works as a Janitor) has bigger plans. ” It all started 10 or so years ago with a love for Guinness “, he says. I even named my dog Guinness. ”  When the american IPA trend hit Scandinavia a couple of years later he started to show more interest in brewing beer and not just drinking it. ” One day I decided to visit the homebrewing shop Humlegården and I bought my first brewing equipment “.

The homebrewery started up in his own garage but later when he moved he needed to rent another place (a brewery room, a tasting and meeting room and some storage) in Västerås. He is also building some new and larger equipment (two 100 liter vessels in stainless steel). His plan is to start brewing commercially during 2013.

What kind of beers could we expect from Bryggeri Portvakten?
“I do not brew according to style”, he replies. ” In fact I think that is a bit boring. I am going to brew beers that I like. That is porter/stout kind of beers and different types of IPA:s.”
At the moment he has a lot of different experiments going on using cloudberries and blackcurrant.

Bryggeri Portvakten is not just going to become a brewery. Tomas has plans for brewing courses and meetings at the brewery as well. ” I have met so many nice people since I started my brewery “, he says. ” People come from all over the country to my small brewery, just to brew some beer. ”

Why do you think there are so many new breweries starting up in Sweden now?
” I think many brewers think the same way I do. If he or she can do it, I can do it to! There are so many people interested in beers and brewing now. Brewers share knowledge and information all the time with the public and more people gets involved every day”

Bryggeri portvakten will be the second brewery in Västerås. Will you be competitors?
” I do not think like that at all. I will not compete with anyone. I just want to brew high quality beers. ”

One last question. Where will we be able to taste a Bryggeri Portvakten beer in the future?
” I do not have any official contract yet but I hope I will in the next couple of weeks ”

Tomas is a bit secret about where and when we will be able to taste a Bryggeri Portvakten beer. I would keep my eyes open at some of the best pubs in Västerås during next year. I am not going to tell you more!

Slottskällan and numbers

October 24, 2012

Slottskällans bryggeri has released three beers in their series of “beers with numbers”. They named the first beer in the series Zero (a beer with a theoretically IBU of zero) and the second one Zeven (a Black Saison at ABV 7 % ). Many people thought that the next one would start with a Z as well but the third beer was a Black IPA and called Eight (ABV 8 %).

The inevitable question is whether this was the last in the series of “beers with numbers” or not? Apparently they have plans for more “numbers” but they will not reveal any names at this point. We can only speculate about the name of the next beer. What would you call a single hopped beer, a Dubbelbock, A Belgian Tripel or Quadrupel? Is -10 a good name for an Eisbock?

Slottskällans bryggeri is in Uppsala, the oldest university city in northern Europe, so they might want to brew a beer at 3,14 % called Pi or a low alcohol beer at 2,7 % called e !  If they want to flirt with the Gothenburg market (the pun Mecca) they might brew a beer at 5,9 % and call it high five or brew a Barley Wine at 9 % and call it Barley nine. Some kind of German beer maybe called 4 (at 4.4 %) or continue with the Z theme and just call it Zlatan.

I would like them to brew a beer for Uppsala university and call it 1477 (the year that the university was founded). Maybe call it fourteen seventy seven but then they need larger bottles and labels I guess.

What do you think? Feel free to speculate!

Hembrygdsfestivalen 2012

October 22, 2012

Sällskapet Maltes annual homebrewing festival (Hembrygdsfestivalen) was held this Saturday at Limhamns Folkets Hus in Malmö. Around 250 people visited the event and it was a well-organized event with a lot of interesting beers. I am not surprised at all because I know that there are a lot of talented homebrewers in Sweden and Sällskapet Malte is a really creative and well-organised “society of beer enthusiasts”. I hope this annual festival will continue for many years!

This years winner was Hannes Gruber, Nerdbrewing, with his Else if Imperial Stout 2.0. It is an Imperial Stout (9.5%) with a lot of Magnum and Amarillo hops in it. The winning beer is a modified version of the Else If Imperial Stout that got an award at the Swedish Homebrewing championship 2012 as best newcomer (Årets Grönöling). The brewer wins the chance to brew the beer at Malmö Brygghus later on. If you want to try Else if Imperial Stout it will be available at Malmö Brygghus, the two Bishop’s Arms pubs in Malmö, at På Besök and a new pub in Möllevången. Last year´s winner, Jonas Carlsson Stroh and his Möllan Porter, was a huge success and I reckon this could be to.

Sibbarps Husbryggeri came second with their India Pale Ale (Råg-IPA) and Seven Brewers took third place with their porter Dark SideLakritsporter.

PKLK bryggeri

October 15, 2012

PKLK nanobryggeriHave you ever tasted an Aspooney´s Best Bitter or a VOU – Pale Ale? If you have you might know the brewer already. If you haven’t you will be able to soon because there is a new brewery starting up in Enskede, Stockholm.  PKLK bryggeri is a small brewery and the person behind it is Peter Pikulik, hence the name of the brewery (PiKuLiK).

” I will start in a small-scale “, he says. ” I have a 50L Braumeister brewery and I will brew every second week and hopefully be able to brew every week in the future if the demand increases. “

About the brewer
Peter has a Degree of Master in product- and process-development and works as a consultant in the mechanic construction and design industry.

” I have had an interest in beers for some time now but it has increased a lot the last couple of years. My good friend Niklas Andersson (one of the people behind the beer blog Öljuntan) is my main source of inspiration and he is also designs the labels. “

In October 2011, Peter did his first homebrew and has been hooked ever since. ” The most exciting part of brewing is to make a recipe, brew it and to get it to taste excactly the way you want. I would like to continue to experiment and make new recipes. Having a small brewery makes me very flexible and I can make changes and small adjustments for each costumer. “

About the future
PKLK bryggeri has two customers already, Vou Club (in Södertälje) and Enskede Värdshus, just waiting for Peter to get his license. To Vou club he will deliver a low bitter, straight forward, Pale Ale. Peter is given a lot of freedom to experiment and they are already planning for a new recipe. Hopefully they will be able to have some beer/brew meetings there as well in the future. Do not miss that if you live in Södertälje or close by.

The Ensked Värdshus beer will be a classic bitter at 5 % (a modified Aspooney Bitter).

Peter ends the interview with ” the next thing is to brew an Imperial Belgian Brown (10 %) with Shamrock syrup. A complex, yet easy to drink beer. I am also going to brew two types of christmas beers”.

That more or less summarize his whole filosophy. New, innovative and exciting beers in small batches.
